“Discovering Vertebrates!” is a student-friendly Science Project resource designed to explore animals with backbones through guided research and observation. Students work individually or in groups (space is provided for up to six group members) and choose an animal to investigate using a structured brochure-style worksheet.
The main project page includes clear checklists and writing prompts that guide students to:
-
Identify the animal’s vertebrate group (mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians)
-
Describe how it reproduces (viviparous, oviparous, ovoviviparous)
-
Explain what it eats and classify it as carnivore, herbivore, or omnivore
-
Decide if it is cold-blooded or warm-blooded
-
Label body parts, describe how it breathes, and where it lives
-
Add creativity through a drawing and a fun fact section
To support classroom organization, the resource also includes pages where students are assigned to a vertebrate category and can choose from suggested animals in each group, such as:
-
Mammals: Koala, Dolphin, Bat
-
Reptiles: Chameleon, Komodo Dragon, Sea Turtle
-
Amphibians: Poison Dart Frog, Axolotl, Tree Frog
-
Birds: Ostrich, Hummingbird, Penguin
-
Fish: Clownfish, Pufferfish, Seahorse
This resource is ideal for science centers, inquiry-based learning, group projects, or a mini research unit on animal classification and vertebrates.
